About the Play
A feud, going back several decades, between two families, erupts anew when the Capulet and Montague clans meet in broad daylight. With the Prince trying to install order, this order lasts only briefly since the Montague clan risks further conflict by secretly gate-crashing the Capulets’ masked ball. Romeo, although pining for Rosaline, instantly falls in love with Capulet’s daughter, Juliet. While Capulet has arranged for Juliet to marry County Paris, she, too, falls in love with Romeo. With the help of Friar Laurence and Juliet’s nurse, the lovers arrange to be married the next day. The wedding takes place, and all seems well. Then tragedy strikes! Romeo attempts to halt a street fight which leads to the death of his best friend Mercutio and then Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. Thus, Romeo is banished. Meanwhile Juliet’s father sets the wedding date for her and Paris. Juliet, desperate to avoid being married to Paris, seeks Friar Laurence’s help and feigns her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her …
